AAOTG: A new story of taste, society and dreams

We think that representation is important to Arab American Occupational Therapy Group (AAOTG). You feel safe and belong when you come across people with whom you share similar identities in a career or a group.

This is why the group is still expanding and is nowadays an active community of practice of occupational therapy practitioners, teachers, researchers, students and fellow colleagues in the United States.

AAOTG is specifically for those with roots or ancestry connected to Arab identity. We are creating a platform where Arab culture, identity, and professional excellence converge.

Who We Are

AAOTG was founded by three experienced and visionary leaders. Through their own experiences, they understood the importance of recognizing Arab identity in the professional world.

Dr. Razan Hamid – Columbia University, New York

A clinician, researcher, teacher, and leader. He began AAOTG in the memory of his father, Tayseer Hamid, who was a great lover of his Arab identity and culture. According to Dr. Razan, culture and identity must be adopted even in the workplace.

Dr. Saeed Nafai – American International College, Massachusetts

An occupational therapist who worked in Morocco and incorporated the culture of the country into his practice. His experience shows that Arab identity is important even in other countries.

Eida Koraytem – Long Island University, New York

Highly engaged in education, community, and advocacy. Her practice ensures recognition and support for people of Arab origin in the OT profession.

Together, these three transformed AAOTG into a family, a support system, and a source of inspiration.

Our Mission, Vision, and Values

Mission

To connect OT members residing in the United States who are of Arab descent or identity by offering networking opportunities, collaboration, and professional growth.

Vision

To establish a creative, motivated, and cohesive community that addresses the needs of Arab American OT members.

Core Values

  • Cultural Acceptance and Inclusion: Celebrating Arab diversity and richness.
  • Representation & Voice: Providing representation and respect for Arab Americans in academia, clinical practice, research, and leadership.
  • Collaboration & Support: Building one another through networking, mentorship, and resources.

Why AAOTG is Important

Many Arab American OT students and professionals face unique challenges today:

  • Feeling culturally isolated or misunderstood
  • Limited representation in leadership and academia
  • Difficulty finding mentors who understand their identity and cultural background
  • Lack of visibility in professional spaces

AAOTG provides solutions by developing community, expanding cultural dialogue, and integrating Arab heritage into OT education, research, and practice. When professionals bring their full identity to work, it increases confidence, improves patient care, and benefits society.
